The Jennings Junior High School English Language Arts Curriculum actively engages students in the processes of reading,writing, speaking, and listening. Reading materials are information and fiction texts. Writing involves addressing narrative, explanatory, and argumentative prompts. Students learn the value and excitement of key processes and are exposed to a variety of exercises to strengthen their knowledge, Additionally, students will participate in Socratic seminars to gain a deeper understanding of complex ideas in text through rigorous and thoughtful dialogues.
Course Expectations Alignment of the Jennings School District English Language Arts Curriculum to the Missouri Learning Standards ensures that the students are learning the appropriate standards at the appropriate time. Students are expected to be advanced or proficient on each standard to ensure success in future learning and life skills.
Instructional Focus Students will read short stories, novels, and informational texts to identify main idea, supporting details, summarizing, and characterization to facilitate Socratic Seminar. Writing is as important as reading in our class. Students write to construct answer to open-ended questions, and to compose essays, Students will complete vocabularyexercises where they will be expected to utilize critical words and phrases during verbal and written assignments. Students receive weekly homework packets, weekly tests and/or quizzes, as well as quarterly projects.
